INDIAN BURIALS IN NOTTAWA INDIAN CEMETERY (RED MAN CEMETERY)
¶
Note: Links included below to the death records at SeekingMichigan.org are broken due to a change at that site.
Land for the cemetery was deeded 15 Jun 1875. David Ford and his wife, Margery J. (Hyslop) of Berrien Co., MI deeded the land to The Board of Health of Nottawa. The record is found in Liber 43, page 365, and sold for the sum of $200.00. The description reads as follows: Five acres of land on the North half of the South East quarter of Section Three (3) Town fifteen (15) and North Range five (5) West Commencing on the North East corner of Said description, then running South forty (40) rods. Thence west twenty (20) rods. Thence North forty (40) rods...Thence East twenty (20) rods to the place of beginning, for the use of Said township for a Cemetery.
There are six headstones in the cemetery....none of which exactly match the interments, however, there may be some clues. The headstone of JOHN and MARY, may be John and Mary Pego...LILIAN TAHQUEGH may be Lilian Gruett ...HELEN WAWABOSWAY may be the wife of Joseph Akenbell.
